metkawakubo_reikawakubocommedesgarcons_met_expoFeelings come, feelings go but #METKAWAKUBO is here to leave an indelible mark. The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute recently announced that iconic independent Japanese designer and Comme des Garçons founder Rei Kawakubo will be the subject of their spring 2017 fashion exhibition and we’re in a tizzy. As the second designer ever to be chosen for such an exhibition during their lifetime (the first being Yves Saint Laurent in ’83), this is major on many different levels – much like Kawakubo’s designs. Just this October, at the Paris presentation of the ‘Invisible Clothes’ SS17 collection, we were collectively reminded why a grand-scale retrospective is much deserved. Kawakubo operates on that lone genius level.comme-des-garcons_ss17_3

The Andrew Bolton-curated show named “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons” will feature about 120 pieces of archive Comme des Garçons womenswear, ranging from the first 1981 Paris Fashion Week show (a dark and disheveled seismic shift of a collection named “Destroy”) to the most recent one. According to The Met, the recurrent theme will be the designer’s experiments in ‘inbetween-ness’, the ‘space between boundaries’. The mannequins will also be presented at eye level in order to eliminate any usual barriers museum visitors may encounter.comme-des-garcons_met_museum_paolo-roversi

As we anticipate the first images and reports from #METKAWAKUBO in May (I for one can’t wait to see which looks Solange and Bey will be serving at the expo’s inaugural Met Ball), we’ve lined up a few trailblazing Comme des Garçons moments that are sure to make the cut or that definitely deserve to.comme-des-garcons-1981_victoria-albert-museum

I’ve only just about regained my respiratory abilities from the Alexander McQueen ‘Savage Beauty’ expo, which originated at The Met, so this one might tip me over the edge. Fan out my Blue Encens-infused ashes at Dover Street Market, please.

May 4th 2017 – September 4th 2017 at The Metropolitan Museum of Art (NYC)
