LET’S TALK ABOUT THE NEW SOULWAX ALBUM “FROM DEEWEE”

Posted on March 20th, by immi in magazine, music. No Comments

With their first studio effort in 12 (!) years burning a hole in whichever digital port much-anticipated releases are stocked in, brothers Stephen and David Dewaele and Stefaan Van Leuven of Soulwax are slated to remain the GOATs of Belgo-international alternative rock/electronic music. Since the inception of Soulwax in ’95, they’ve been irrepressible. They headline around the planet as 2manydjs (first known as ‘The Fucking/Flying Dewaele Brothers’), created their own Beats 1 radio show “2×2” and visual radio station plus app for Radio Soulwax, own an independent record label and studio, co-created a sound system project called Despacio (‘slowly’) and their remixes mostly eclipse the originals (you don’t want to know how foolish I went to their “Standing In The Way of Control” remix age sixteen, there should be lo-fi footage out there somewhere). As from Friday March 24, “FROM DEEWEE” – the duo’s … Read More »

CHILDISH GAMBINO DROPS NEW ALBUM ‘AWAKEN, MY LOVE!’ (LISTEN)

Posted on December 2nd, by immi in magazine, music. No Comments

We could all write trilogies on how this year got us messed up but undeniably music has come to our collective rescue in 2016. A fresh release to add to the pantheon of 2016 greats is Childish Gambino’s newly dropped ‘Awaken, My Love!’. A funk rock cloud of an album, it shows off a whole new side of this artist/actor/spiritualist/woke bae slash imaginary husband of many (mine too, girl).

Even though people are far from being finished talking about the acclaimed FX show ‘Atlanta’ – in which Gambino (government name Donald Glover) plays a Princeton dropout manager trying to make his cousin’s rap career lift off next to being the show’s EP – the album provides copious fodder for new conversation. And what about that gorgeous cover art, featuring Kenyan model Giannina Oteto?

Inspired by his childhood memories of hearing Funkadelic or The Isley … Read More »

‘BLONDE’ BY FRANK OCEAN: A REVIEW

Posted on August 22nd, by immi in magazine, music. 1 Comment

He took a nap. People were already anaemic recovering from ‘Endless’ and Frank Ocean took a nap as his excruciatingly anticipated new album debuted online. This is Joanne The Scammer levels of unbothered. We’d been waiting to exhale for the longest, but ‘Blonde’ is finally here. Though it may actually be called ‘Blond’. What’s titular consistency to a non-believer?

Differing quite vastly from the experimental soundscape of the visual album ‘Endless’, ‘Blonde’ is all lyrical beauty and guitar melodies. Seventeen tracks, created in collaboration with a list of people so grandiose it’s frankly just tew much: Arca, Beyoncé, Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, André 3000, Jazmine Sullivan, Rick Rubin, Brian Eno, Kendrick Lamar, James Blake, Rostam Batmanglii, Yung Lean, Kim Burrell, Jamie XX, Tyler The Creator, Gang of Four and do I really need to continue because honestly this doesn’t even sound real. Frank!

Good luck … Read More »

I DO THINK IT’S EVIDENT THAT I’M THE LORD’S FAVORITE AND NOW IS THE TIME I SHOULD HAVE WHATEVER I DESIRE

Posted on July 28th, by legrandfromage in magazine, music, video. No Comments

IceAge shuffle off all requests to save punk and come out swaggering (note: actual, grammatically correct use of swaggering: deserves a pass) with a glorious romper of a new track called ‘The Lord’s Favorite’.

I WORRY LIKE DONALD GLOVER

Posted on October 15th, by Dominique in magazine, music. No Comments

I’ve got a thing for Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino (aka Troy in “Community” and Sandy in “Girls”).

I think he’s smart, funny, extra talented and dude is CUTE.

Last night he posted some thoughts on Instagram.

I recognize the desire of wanting to get things done on your own merit while at the same time wishing there was some blue print to follow.

I recognize a lot of things he says in these notes.

I think you do too.

I think we all worry like Donald Glover.

“Because The Internet”, the new Childish Gambino album will be in stores late December.

Meanwhile you can still download the “Royalty” Mixtape HERE.

A LETTER FROM GABRIEL RIOS

Posted on October 9th, by Dominique in life, magazine, music, video. No Comments

Shit, NYC. I’m not sure whether I need to be thankful for regurgitating our boy, or be fucking pissed off at you for not recognizing an amazing talent when it’s standing on your doorstep singing about little boys who die of frostbite. (‘For The Wolves’ will always be my song and I remember comparing the ‘Angelhead’ album to D’Angelo’s ‘Voodoo’, which pissed a lot of people off, but whatever.)

All I can say is that I will never be mad at the fact that Gabriel Rios, one of the first people I interviewed for TV and a couple of years later for print media (ELLE), is somewhere near and about to release new music.

I don’t want to say he’s the smart & hot girl’s Justin Timberlake, but I’m kind of thinking it. (+ He doesn’t wear fedoras and his girlfriend is … Read More »

KANYE WEST – NEW ALBUM: ‘MY BEAUTIFUL TWISTED FANTASY’: BANNED ARTWORK

Posted on October 18th, by legrandfromage in life, music. 1 Comment

G.o.o.d. news from camp ‘Ye: the album is finished. Not so good news: the album cover art is facing censorship.

The artwork is “Me chillin’ on the couch with my phoenix”. A traditional theme in art history, as we all know.

Mr. West just released the uncensored version on Twitter, along with some rants and a hashtag I’m going to be using every day for the rest of the year in real life: #kanyeshrug.
