The greatest working Director of Photography out there, our own Nicolas Karakatsanis, was commissioned by fellow Belgians Warhola and Danish director Anders Malmberg to shoot the video for “Jewels”.
No one knows how to do shadow play and get you to detect details in the darkness like NK.
Each frame a gem, the “Jewels” visual is a meditation on tumbling teens, muscle mass, neck veins, crew cuts and subtly glistening leotards (I kind of want one now).
The face paint seems a bit extra, but as Anders Malmberg told Nowness:
” The song title, Jewels, inspired me to create a dark universe inhabited by face painted gymnasts, expressionistic figures, who would be like jewels in the night performing their routines.”
Watch the video below and read our last interview with Nicolas Karakatsanis (who posted on IG that he’s working on new stuff) HERE.

‘A sight for sore eyes’, that would be one way to describe the universe of Belgian interior designer and architect Gert Voorjans. If Gucci’s recent renaissance under Alessandro Michele’s baroque-meets-70s aesthetic was an indication of how much people were ready for a dash of opulence and eclectic grandiosity in their lives again, Voorjans could have told you that 25 years ago. In a time when 90s minimalism reigned supreme, he had a vision and stuck to it. International success, celebrity clientele and a devoted following ensued. If you’ve ever stepped inside a Dries Van Noten flagship store, marvelled at the decor and wondered ‘why don’t I live like this, like, can I stay?’, you only have one name to jot down.
A career that impressive calls for a closer look at the homes he has transformed, which is exactly what Voorjans’s … Read More »

I come from an upbringing where I struggled with the dichotomy that comes with spending one’s childhood and early teenage years in a strict catholic school environment with mandated weekly church visits and all its accompanying subservient rituals, while on the other hand going home to the gritty and grey but proud and somehow boasting and free-feeling aesthetics of social housing. The latter is where I spent a lot of hours holed up in my room with my books and music (and the few magazines that were available in our small-ish town), watching my older brother hang out with his skater friends and observing the lanky and pale drugged-out neighbourhood boys with faded haircuts wearing shiny skinny necklaces circle around on souped-up mopeds, football scarves tied around mouth and chin.
I know now, this is why, some years later, in the late 90s, the fashion imagery … Read More »

Raise your hands if you have been fangirl-ing over a Director of Photography and Visual Artist for almost ten years straight. No one? Nicolas Karakatsanis makes it so easy, though. He has captured groundbreaking music videos for artists like Baloji and The Hickey Underworld, is currently one of the most sought-after DOP’s in the world (watch “The Drop” with Tom Hardy and the late James Gandolfini if you haven’t and hold out for “Triple 9” with Casey Affleck, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kate Winslet, set to be released in 2016) and he has won multiple awards doing so. Over the years he has also shot some of the most gorgeous images ever, plus he is now collaborating with legendary fashion photographer Willy Vanderperre.
Because Nicolas has a brand new exhibition called “WAYS OF SEEING – EPISODE 1”- coming up at … Read More »

A little over a year ago, Devon Halfnight LeFlufy’s then-fiancée, the gorgeous and lovely Goedele contacted me to see if we were interested in an interview with her boyfriend who was about to graduate from the prestigious Antwerp Fashion Academy with an ovation from a jury comprised of a.o. the Antwerp 6, Suzy Menkes and Hirofumi Kurino. The result was an interview that to this date gets a lot of love from all over the world. This time around, the super talented designer contacted me himself with a short : “Yo D, I hope you are doing well. I think it’s time we have another one of those chats. Would you like to come visit the studio?”
So much has happened within the span of one year : Devon Halfnight LeFlufy just … Read More »
KNOTORYUS TALKS TO ARTIST KATRIEN MATTHYS & AWARD WINNING DIRECTOR / PHOTOGRAPHER TOON AERTS : “THERE IS A DRUG DEALER OUT THERE WAITING TO PUNCH ME IN THE MOUTH.”
(c) Toon Aerts
Toon Aerts is a good and talented dude. He directs award winning short films, makes dope commercials and takes an amazing picture. I first got to know his work when Alice van den Abeele & Raphaël Cruyt invited me in 2007 to come see the duo exhibition he was doing with fellow photographer and director Nicolas Karakatsanis at ALICE Gallery. That’s where I immediately fell hard for Toon’s photographic view on the world. An eye, as he reveals in our talk, he was learning to trust thanks to encouraging words of Alice (This woman, ugh. So amazing). Years later, in the Summer of 2013, I was asked to produce and style a shoot for the Style & Interior Design Magazine KWINTESSENS using pieces of the freshly graduated Masters of the Antwerp Fashion Academy (incl. Minju Kim and … Read More »

Go see the exhibit in the VII gallery in Brooklyn between November 8 and December 6. It’s called ‘Chromes’, it looks amazing and we used it as an excuse to ask him stuff.
Could be random, awesome or merely making me go : “I don’t know what that means but : HAHA!”
+ 50 year-old m o t h e r f u c k i n g HAMMER after the jump. I said FIFTY.
