Raf Simons has announced a new Antwerp archive and stock sale from Wednesday May 10 till Saturday May 13 and the acolytes are buzzing. If you haven’t yet known the awkward pleasure of getting disrobed in front of fashion students in a co-ed warehouse makeshift dressing room with a sweaty palm full of discount Raf Simons, May’s the month!
You’ll be able to get your mitts on archive Raf Simons clothing, shoes, accessories and fabrics (you can make Raf sheets, Raf curtains, Random Raf draping hanging from the chandelier!). The discounts are usually quite generous, so there’s no excuse for you to miss out. You might even run into Willy Vanderperre, if you’re lucky (even though that might be more likely at a full price, name-on-the-door, In The Name Of situation).
In preparation, here’s a top 5 of archive Raf pieces that you should pray to snatch up … Read More »
I’ve pondered this a couple of times: how does signing a longterm contract and moving to a new country feel if you made this decision during a legendary time when the first black president in said country’s history (who happens to be an avid celebrator of the arts in all its forms) was finishing up a second term, while it looked like even more liberal history would be made with the upcoming election of the first female president ever. But, instead what happens is -against all expectations- you find yourself waking up to a reality tv-star cum president favouring racist, sexist and homophobic policies. To make matters worse, the founder and namesake of the company you are now creatively heading -who fortunately doesn’t get to decide who you can or can’t design for, since he sold the company in 2002- openly expresses his support for said president and even offers to design the new first lady’s inauguration dress. This is exactly what happened to … Read More »
Belgian band Warhaus, fronted by Maarten Devoldere of Balthazar and Sylvie Kreusch of Soldier’s Heart, needed a video for their new single ‘Machinery’ off of their debut record ‘We Fucked a Flame Into Being’. It’s clear they know what’s good, because they were able to enlist the ever-discerning eye and director’s hand of Willy Vanderperre to bring their tune to life.
The song is a sweltering, brassy passion piece and the video’s blue-hued, oh-so-Belgian reception hall is an exquisite scene to set lyrics like “I don’t claim to be sober, I don’t claim to be right”. Devoldere gives that ‘earnest but misguided drunk dude climbs on makeshift stage at the end of the local function to lay out his feels’ performance to a tee, while Kreusch flings herself into the character of last girl standing with aplomb and the perfect amount of sequins. A mysterious … Read More »
Ahead of Raf Simons’ debut show as Chief Creative Officer for Calvin Klein on February 10th, the brand has elected to let us in on their first new wave, dubbed ‘By Appointment’. Calvin Klein’s New York celebrity by-appointment atelier will now become a line on its own, no longer just catering to the wealthy and famous but acting as an open bespoke service for all, from custom traditional embroidery to modern tailoring. A fresh take on an established tradition, which seems aptly foreboding.
Shot and styled by Raf’s trusted team of Willy Vanderperre + Olivier Rizzo, the first drop of lookbook images (named ‘CKBA 1-14’) zooms in on Americana iconography. In a press statement, Simons notes ‘Calvin Klein is not only about iconic underwear and jeans – it’s about so much more’. In the images, every decade of American women’s fashion, from the … Read More »
True story, I once burnt a frozen pizza because I was too busy watching a Gucci live stream up in my room. Dad kept yelling from the bottom of the stairs, but to no avail. What he didn’t realise at the time was that live-tweeting ‘I die, this Mongolian shearling caban coat is ba-nanas’ (we were still in the thick of the Rachel Zoe-isms era) had absolute priority over not incinerating foodstuffs. (I still had to eat the charred remains, though).
All of this to say that I get it: fashion shows still fill so many of us with unabated frisson, and being able to ‘attend’ and comment from your room is what gets many students through their exams, for example. So here’s a list of a few shows during menswear month that you should definitely tap-tap-tap into your phone’s reminders, … Read More »
If a friendly passer-by only just lifted the rock you were trapped under for the past few months, here you go: the visionary Belgian designer Raf Simons was named chief creative officer of Calvin Klein in August of 2016, confirming swirling rumours which had only intensified after the dual departure of veteran Calvin Klein designers Francisco Costa & Italo Zuchelli a few months prior.
For many, Simons’ departure from Dior in 2015 and subsequent candour on the killer pace of fashion signified a shift back to a calmer-paced life, perhaps exclusively focused on the namesake Raf Simons brand. So taking over such a huge, iconic American staple seemed like a droll move. But Calvin Klein is no centuries-old couture house, there is a lot of room to play around in here. The options for Raf’s Calvin are googolplex.
So what have we gathered so … Read More »
Rihanna’s first collection as Puma’s creative director, which debuted at #NYFW in February and was seemingly made for Naomi, has dropped and the girls and boys are shook. Drake will be out here stanning in full #FENTYXPUMA crop top kimono sleeves any day now, I promise you.
If the creepers and fur slides hadn’t caused enough of a scene this year, the entire collection is now available for purchase. First in pop-up shops in New York and L.A., now via Puma’s website. If you felt somewhat lacking in the bad bitch department of late, these strappy black and white designs (Rihsigns) will have the peers gagging and doubling over, returning to the hater-sized holes from whence they came.

Now that everybody can stop pretending to have been super shook when it was announced by Calvin Klein that “Raf Simons signed on as Chief Creative Officer of E-Ve-Ry-Thing bih what? Yes that also means he gets to head the Global Marketing Department and that hot mess of a Calvin Klein jewellery division. And let me specifically add, hoe, that nobody and I really mean not a goddamn person during their entire time here will attempt to talk smack to or will try Pieter Mulier in any kind of way blink twice if you understand. Now let’s work.”*- we can let the master do his thing and for now focus on his FW2016 drops.
First on our list: all the releases from the Raf Simons x adidas Originals collection which boasts two new models. One new pack is the “adidas by Raf Simons Matrix Spirit” which includes high and low tops in four different colour … Read More »
Hopefully you’re reading this on a scorching beach squinting over the rim of your shades while holding your phone upside down “‘cause that really gets the WiFi juices flowing”. Hopefully you haven’t even picked up a newspaper lately because you’d only have to instantly slap it back down screeching “Not today, Satan”. Hopefully you’re hiking with your family and someone left an unlocked, fully charged iPad on this exact web page perched on a rock and your interest can’t help but be piqued. If none of that’s the case: here are some things to quench your spirit thirst, as the dog days creep closer.
No we’re wearing the Gucci, mother
Okay, so Formation is finally coming to Belgium this weekend and I’m bursting at the seams with anticipation. I’ve managed to dodge concert footage for months, like I was curving a particularly … Read More »
When you’d ask the question what I was doing when I first heard about Belgian band GOOSE, the answer would probably be heavy on the “coming down from the incredible high of an MTV Europe internship and trying to figure out what’s next” stories. I remember back in 2000, first and foremost, I really dug GOOSE’s sneering sound, but I was particularly into their boy-bravado that felt defiant while also being remarkably non bro-ish. These 4 kids from Kortrijk brought the heat and besides snatching the first prize in the only music competition that actually means something in these neck of the woods, they subsequently started grabbing all the pop culture headlines. Not because they urgently squeezed out an album trying to cash in on this win, but for saying “nope” and “non” to each and every one of the seemingly sweet record deals offered to … Read More »
