MHYSA - brand nu/Sanaa Lathan

MHYSA is growing out of her cocoon of “Queer Black Diva and underground popstar for the cyber resistance” with a unique official debut album on Hyperdub that’s clearly a step up to wider acclaim. Think Tirzah with gospel and hip hop influences. The album (recorded in her flat) is rooted in personal experiences, “a prayer for Black women and femmes to be taken to or find a new and better world away from the apocalypse… a safe space, a sort of negro heaven.” (It features a song called “Sad Slutty Baby Wants More From The World” and how can you not listen to that?) The video for the first single, “brand nu/Sanaa Lathan” confidently strides from sultry 90’s R&B to southbound hip hop. One to watch.
