Willow Smith, who clearly has no qualms about being so great so early in life, has just dropped the ethereal song ‘November 9th’, written on election day and fully self-produced. Tagged as a ‘transcendental lullaby’, the 1’39” track seeks to alleviate our collective pain, even if just for a moment, by reminding us not to abandon what we believe in despite all the evidence to the contrary. I couldn’t track down the lyrics yet so I transcribed them below for your soul’s nourishment.
Baby girl I know you’re tired
Don’t let the world put out your fire
Take my hand and you will see
Sadness and anger aren’t everything
Baby boy don’t lose your sweetness
Don’t think your humanity equals weakness
Take my hand and you shall see
Suppression and pain are not everything
Little rock up in the sky
Just know we’re sick and asking why
Little ball falls through the void
It holds us together and endures our choices
With three amazing sisters in my life, I’m quite settled in the sibling department but Willow is still formally invited to every family function for all perpetuity (Jaden, you too). Work like this is the silver lining to any cloud of doom we may feel looming over us at the moment and I can’t wait for Willow’s sophomore album. In the meantime, her occasional drops and killer memes will tide us over just fine.
