Mixtape Monday Special: Dj Screw

DJ Screw died of a codeine overdose  on November 16, 13 years ago. This is the man who pioneered the 'chopped 'n screwed' slowed down version of hiphop. His alias was 'The Originator'. Every time you hear a slowed down deep and dirty voice snippet on your favourite Brodinski mix or OddFuture, Kendrick Lamar or Kanye West tracks, this is the guy you should be giving a solemn head nod of appreciation. His mixtapes were literally tapes, cassette tapes which were passed around by those in the know and now, thanks to the Internet, available to all. His influence on today's music should be considered no less than Giorgio Moroder, Dr. Dre or Pharrell. There are more than 200 DJ Screw mixtapes out there for you to discover. Here's one of our favourites: "It's all good" (Chapter 107).
