Watch the New 'High Maintenance' Cycle and Become a Better Person (Possibly)

High Maintenance is back!

Their new cycle of short films looks very promising. Somehow, they seem to tap into what it means to be alive right now.

They've released two new episodes so far and my favourite is 'Qasim'. On the surface, it has a good plot twist and pretty people and beautiful camera work... but beneath all this, the story and all its glorious details explore what people are doing (or what they think they need to be doing) to make their lives better. For some, it's a cycling class or exploring new sleeping patterns. For others, it's a new gadget to smoke weed without hurting your throat. But once you start thinking: 'this will make me better', where do you stop? I was listening to the WTF podcast by Marc Maron with the brilliant Simon Amstell last week and he was talking about how his weekly schedule had suddenly become overwhelmed with Yoga classes, accupuncture, etc. and he asked himself: 'Just how broken do I think I am?' Right? Does anyone else have these kind of epiphanies? And then just move on with your life? Because that's what you do. Maybe take a nap first. A scheduled nap. One that makes you better as a person, preferably. What's your epiphany vs. nap ratio? Is there a number I can aspire to?

Anyway, you can totally watch High Maintenance without bothering with these kind of life questions.

It's beautiful, funny stuff.

And while you're at it: check out the second new episode, the heartachingly cute 'Matilda'.
