Soul Glo - 'Tiny Desk Concert'

Soul Glo - 'Tiny Desk Concert'

For a person like myself, whose world experience hinges on words most of the time, the fact that Soul Glo even exists is a blessing in full force. Not only are they an excellent hardcore band, the lyricism of frontman Pierce Jordan is an awe-inspiring, unrelenting torrent of brilliance. The speed, sheer volume and emotional delivery of his words can be bewildering at first, but I do urge you (nay, beseech you) to read through the lyrics and then listen again. To quote from opener "Jump!! (Or Get Jumped!!!)((by the future))”’ : "How do I remember (They ask) / What I spit out the tooth? (Hmm) / I don’t need to make mental notes when this shit is just the truth / But what matters more, of course, is my resources / It’s chores until support, there’s no divorcing / I’m screaming through your door, “we'll take control by force" / And you gon' watch me spit the world into the floor.” Or what about this snippet from their Tiny Desk moshpit closer "Gold Chain Punk (whogonbeatmyass?)" which feels like it should be scrawled on every door we walk through from now on: "Can I pull up on myself and disclaim whoever else voice that is / That say my mistakes only why I exist too much and too loudly for me to question it? / Can I exist in love of my own decisions? Yeah / Can I hold my own hand under my weighted blanket? / Forgiveness is a ghost to my mind, ever-fading from my sight with time / Out here happy and dying, that's life / Savagery run it and I'm doing just, just, just fine / Just, just, just, just, just fine, just fine.” This entire Tiny Desk Concert simply balloons my heart with a mixture of joy and rage that is bestowed upon the world by those rare poets that matter most. Not to categorise and constrict, but … that is the category in which these artists belong.
