It took (a trip to) a village to make the new Blood Orange album: the credit list on the gorgeously grieving ‘Essex Honey’ sees many artists of a feather joyfully flocking together. ‘Countryside’ is a prime example of how Mr. Hynes perfectly slots the featuring voices of Eva Tolkin, Liam Benzvi & Ian Isiah into the sheath of the song. On first listen, it’s sometimes unclear where one voice begins and another chimes in. Everything is in service of the overall mood, which you could describe as ‘wistful’, ‘softly defiant’ or maybe just beyond the reach of mere vocabulary. 7 years have passed since his last album. But it was worth the wait.
